Inktober 2017: all about the kids

For Inktober 2017 my focus is not my own drawing practice but that of my class! So excited.

I'm passionate about challenging the common refrain of "I can't draw". Everyone can draw.

Through this daily practice (we do 10 minutes after lunch, every day) I am already seeing the kids begin to reframe drawing as a communication and ideas generation tool, rather than a novelty or a time filler. Best of all they just enjoy it.

Library wall graphics

My biggest illustration to date! These wall graphics were recently installed on the walls of the children's area of the Hamra library, Adelaide. The design had to negotiate all sorts of awkward box-outs, doors, signage and the like, but it will certainly lift the space. This area is close to the airport so the client was keen on an 'flying' theme (unfortunately the dragons and flying pigs didn't make it).

City of Unley map

I LOVE making maps! This is the second illustrated map commission I have done for this Adelaide client. Even with Google maps being as amazing as they are, they don't allow you to focus and highlight on specific areas in the way a personalised map can.

School Holiday Cartoon Workshop fun times!

Last week I ran a cartoon workshop, hosted by the fabulous Coastal Environment Centre, for a group of children aged 6 through 12. We had a blast, and the kids went home with lots of good ideas. For me it was a great opportunity to work with some Environmental Educators whilst using my creative skills!

My sister Sarah and I have scored a table on Sunday at this year's MCA zine fair.

Drop in, say hello, and check out a whole lot of self-published awesomeness.

Blur caricature for Rolling Stone

An illustration to accompany Rolling Stone review of the new album The Magic Whip from olde timey Britpop darlings Blur. I couldn't stop thinking about Julian Opie's classic album cover. So this is a bit of a tribute to that, with extra grey hair, wrinkles and broken dreams.

Crazy to think it was more than 20 years ago that I was listening to their debut album Leisure for the first time at a school mate's pool party.

Kids Book Club Illustrations

I've been working on a commission for United Way lately, creating characters for their terrific Kids Book Club program which helps disadvantaged kids get reading. This project was a a bit of a dream combination of two of my great interests: education and illustration!
